Donovan Delivers Baseball Win Over Utah Valley State

LEWISTON, Ida. - Gonzaga University sophomore pitcher Patrick Donovan tossed a gem Friday afternoon as the Bulldogs blasted Utah Valley State College, 21-0, to open the Banana Belt Classic in Lewiston, Idaho. Gonzaga (3-8) ended a seven-game losing skid while UVSC dropped to 1-5 during their first season of NCAA Division I competition.
Donovan (1-1) was sharp all contest allowing only two Utah Valley State hits during eight innings of work in which he struck out 13 batters. Donovan was perfect until the sixth inning when Trent Perry broke up the no-hit bid. Dan Bulow would follow with the Wolverines second hit of the game against Donovan but UVSC would never threaten to score. Darrin Trautmann pitched the ninth to close out the game.
Gonzaga scored early and often against UVSC starter Aaron Tash (0-2). The Bulldogs scored one in the first and two more in the second before putting the contest away with a 6-run third inning.
Jeff Culpepper paced the Bulldogs attack with a 4-for-5 day at the plate with 6 RBI and two home runs. Chris Sinner went 4-for-6 and Mike Rundle was 3-for-6 with 4 RBI.
Gonzaga closed out the game with 22 hits after adding eight more runs in the eighth inning. The Bulldogs will face Lewis-Clark State College in the second game of a Friday doubleheader.
