SPOKANE, Wash. - Gonzaga sophomore Patrick Donovan was masterful on Sunday afternoon as he limited the Saint Mary's Gaels (14-38, 7-20 WCC) to just seven hits during 8.1 innings of work as the Bulldogs (24-26, 16-11 WCC) swept their three-game West Coast Conference series with a 4-1 win on Sunday afternoon at Avista Stadium.
Donovan's only run allowed came in the ninth as Preston Young opened with double and scored on an infield single by Delaney Gallagher. John Gonzalez entered the game and picked up two ground ball outs to close out the game for Donovan and pick up his third save of the weekend and sixth of the year. Donovan improved to 4-3 with the win.
Saint Mary's starter Justin Sloan also pitched a solid game with only one inning of Bulldogs offense costing him on the afternoon. Sloan fell to 2-6 on the year allowing all four Gonzaga runs in seven innings of work.
The Gonzaga offense churned out three runs in the second inning as Brad Welker opened the scoring with an RBI single to left. Aaron McGuinness followed with an RBI double and Chris Sinner capped the scoring with a sacrifice fly.
