SAN DIEGO - The University of San Diego pounded out 21 hits against three Gonzaga University (20-25, 12-11 WCC) pitchers on Saturday afternoon as the Toreros (30-20, 16-10 WCC) blasted Gonzaga, 16-0, to win their West Coast Conference series at Cunningham Stadium in San Diego. The two teams will wrap-up the series on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. with Gonzaga looking to avoid the sweep.
San Diego scored in six of their eight at-bats on Saturday scoring two or more runs in five of those innings. Jordan Abruzzo and Keoni Ruth each drove home three runs for the Toreros, Abruzzo hitting his sixth home run of the season. Josh Hansen, the Toreros hero from Friday's contest, also had two hits with a solo home in the game.
San Diego starter Aaron Wilson (9-3) dominated Gonzaga hitters all afternoon allowing only four hits with six strike outs. David Johnson had two of the Bulldogs base knocks, Aaron McGuinness and Jeff Culpepper connecting for the other two. Sean Warlop pitched a perfect ninth to close out the game. Ed Clelland (4-6) was tagged with the loss after giving up seven earned runs in 5.1 innings of work. Josh Monroe allowed six before senior Darrin Trautmann could end the game with two outs in the eighth.
The Toreros had big scoring outbursts with three runs in the fourth, three more in the sixth and five in the eighth. Gavin Ng had a two-run double in the eighth while Abruzzo and Hansen had back-to-back home runs to open the sixth. Ruth's two-run single was the big shot of the fourth for San Diego which moves to two games behind LMU in the WCC Coast Division race. Gonzaga falls to 4.5 games behind the Lions with seven WCC games remaining.
Aburzzo had four hits for USD while Hansen, Ruth and Randy Curtis all had three hits.
