Aug. 11, 2004

HERAKLIO, GREECE - Gonzaga University senior women's soccer player Walker Loseno earned her first taste of Olympic competition on Wednesday morning as the Greek National team opened the 2004 Athens Summer Olympics with a 3-0 loss to the United States. Loseno played all 90 minutes of the match which was the first event of the 2004 Olympics, two-days prior to the opening ceremonies in Athens.

The US jumped out to a 2-0 advantage on goals by Shannon Boxx and Abby Wambach. Mia Hamm closed out the US scoring with a second half goal. The match was played in front of 15,757 fans at Pankrito Stadium. The Greek National team will face Australia on Aug. 14 and Brazil on Aug. 17 to complete Olympic Pool play. The top two teams from each pool advance to the medal round. This is the first Olympic competition for the Greek National team.

Loseno, a redshirt-senior from Renton, Wash., earned a spot on the Greek National team in the spring of 2003 playing in several international competitions for the squad. Her Greek name is Amalia and she became eligible for the team by virtue of her great grandparents immigrating to the United States from the town of Plomati, the ouzo capital of Greece.
