PROVO, Utah - The start of a two-game road trip didn't turn out like the Gonzaga University women's soccer team had hoped for as they dropped a non-conference match to the Brigham Young University Cougars 3-0 Friday night at South Stadium.
With the win Brigham Young improves to 3-3-0 and Gonzaga drops to 3-2-0 in suffering its first shutout of the season.
The Cougars jumped out to the early lead as sophomore forward Jamie Rendich took a cross from junior midfielder Annie Zwahlen and launched the ball to the far post beating Gonzaga's junior goalkeeper Ashley Haugen in the 22nd minute.
After the break the Bulldogs woes grew as in the 54th minute the Cougars struck again when Zwahlen took advantage of a Bulldog defensive error and snuck the ball past Haugen to give the Cougars a two-goal cushion. BYU scored the final goal of the game in the 77th minute when Carolyn Swenson poked in a deflected shot to give BYU the shutout.
The Cougars outshot the Bulldogs 16-4.
BYU starting goalkeeper Erika Woodbury picked up the win for the Cougars and recorded two saves and Haugen recorded nine saves for Gonzaga.
The Zags return to action on Monday as they travel to play Utah Valley State in a 2:30 p.m. match. GU will return home next Friday to host nearby rival Eastern Washington University in a 3 p.m. match at Martin Field.
