SPOKANE, Wash. - The Gonzaga University women's soccer team (5-2-0) remained undefeated on their home pitch as senior forwards Walker Loseno and Annie Hawkins each recorded one goal and one assist as Gonzaga blanked nearby rival Eastern Washington University (3-4-0), 4-0 Friday at Martin Field.
Gonzaga opened the scoring in the 17th minute as freshman forward Heather Horn recorded her first collegiate goal. Hawkins was able to thread a pass to Horn through a crowded goal box and Horn launched a rocket past Eastern Washington's starting goalkeeper Tiera Como.
Just 58 second later the Bulldogs got another one past Como. Junior defender Stacey Sarro, recording her second assist, skied a pass to Loseno who hit laser shot just past the reach of Como giving the Bulldogs a two goal cushion.
The Zags were not satisfied with a two goal advantage and just before the end of the first period GU netted another ball. This time Loseno was on the giving end of a goal as at the 44:14 mark sophomore midfielder Beth Drollinger, recording her first goal, controlled a pass from Loseno and netted a 20 yard shot from near the top left corner of the goal box.
Hawkins put the finishing touches on an impressive Bulldog performance in the 68th minute. Hawkins found herself with a good look at the goal and rocketed a 15 yard shot that was nearly stopped by the Eagles back-up goalkeeper Kali Paris. The ball hit Paris in the hands as she laid out for the diving save, only to see the ball go behind her and slowly drift past the goal line.
"Our goal today was to play 90 minutes of soccer and we did just that," said Head Coach Shannon Stiles. "We felt like we had several other scoring opportunities that we let slip away, but overall I am happy with the win and with the effort the tem showed."
Haugen recorded eight saves in the match. Como and Paris each had three saves on the day.
GU outshot EWU 19-11 and had a decisive advantage in corner kicks, 7-3.
The Bulldogs are off to their best start in program history and look to remain undefeated at home as they host Idaho State University in a 1 p.m. match on Sunday at Martin field.
