Cal Poly, Calif. - Freshman George Josten came off the bench and scored his team-leading third goal of the season and also added an assist as Gonzaga University blanked Cal Poly 2-0 Friday in a non-conference men's soccer match.
The Bulldogs evened their record at 3-3-0 and earned a split of a pair of road matches for the week. Cal Poly fell to 3-1-1 in losing to Gonzaga for the fifth time in the last six meetings dating back to 1997. The Mustangs had snapped a four-match losing streak to the Bulldogs with last year's 1-0 win in Spokane, and had won two tournaments to open the current season.
Josten scored an unassisted goal at 38:33, catching the left post on a shot from the right wing. That gave the Bulldogs a 1-0 halftime lead. Junior transfer Josh Westermann scored his first career goal as a Bulldog at 82:19 to give the Bulldogs some insurance, Josten getting the assist for his team-leading seventh point of the season.
Head coach Einar Thorarinsson returned Sean Sosnovec to the nets and he had five saves in earning his first career shutout and the first of the young season for the Bulldogs. Sosnovec had started the first three matches for the Bulldogs, was replaced in the second half of the Sacramento State University match and had given way to redshirt freshman Dade Smith in the past two matches, including Wednesday's 6-0 loss at Oregon State University.
Cal Poly held a 16-8 shots advantage, but the Bulldogs contained the Mustangs to just two shots in the game's final 17 minutes when the outcome was still in doubt.
Gonzaga remains on the road next week, heading to Corvallis, Ore., to compete in the Diadora Classic hosted by Oregon State University. The Bulldogs will face Cornell University next Friday and St. Bonaventure University next Sunday.
