SPOKANE, Wash.- Sarah Hawkins put the ball past Utah State University (1-2-0) goalkeeper Megan Mills on a penalty kick with 3:36 remaining to give the Gonzaga University Bulldogs (2-1-0) a 2-1 non-conference women's soccer victory at the Martin Field on Friday afternoon.
After the two teams battled to a scoreless tie in the first half, it was the Aggies who broke through in the scoring column first as Charlsie Harris took a cross from Charity Weston through a crowded goal box and was able to beat Bulldog goalkeeper Ashley Haugen to the lower right corner in the 47th minute.
That awoke the Zags and the GU offense came out howling as they went on the attack. GU was able to keep the ball on the Aggies side of the field and had several good looks at the net over the next several minutes. However, USU's defense stood its ground and didn't allow the Gonzaga equalizer for 10 minutes. Then at the 57:40 mark Walker Loseno, in her first game back from her Olympic stint with the Greek national team in Athens, took a cross from Stacey Sorro and slipped the ball through a flurry of Utah State defenders to even the score.
That set the stage for Hawkins' heroics as with 3:36 remaining Annie Hawkins was taken down by a Utah State defender inside the goal box and was awarded a penalty kick. Sarah Hawkins was able to get the ball past Mills to lift the Bulldogs to a victory.
The Bulldogs out shot their opponents 17-7 and had an 11-8 advantage in corner kicks.
Haugen recorded three saves for the GU win, and her counterpart Mills recorded five saves.
Gonzaga continues its homestand Sunday, hosting Boise State University in a 1 p.m. match at Martin Field
