PORTLAND, Ore. - The University of Portland's Matthew Dallman scored his first goal of the season at 88:46 to take away what seemed like a sure victory for Gonzaga University and the teams battled through a scoreless double overtime in a 2-2 West Coast Conference men's soccer tie Saturday night at Harry A. Merlo Field.
Dallman's goal came when Gonzaga keeper Vito Higgins mishandled a cross, the ball going to Dallman who finished the play from 10 yards out for the equalizer.
Mark Stock scored his second goal of the season at 59:40 to break a 1-1 tie and Gonzaga (3-6-4; 1-3-2) seemed headed for its second victory over the Pilots (4-7-1; 2-4-1) in three days. Gonzaga took a 1-0 home victory over the Pilots on Thursday at Martin Field. Stock's unassisted goal came from the top of the box, beating Portland keeper John Fastabend low to the right side despite Fastaband getting a hand on the ball.
Gonzaga had taken a 1-0 lead at 23:09, Luke Miller back-heeling the ball in from five yards for his second goal of the season, the tally giving the Bulldogs a 1-0 halftime lead. He was assisted by George Josten and Bryan Mullaney.
The Pilots tied the match early in the second half, Patrick Mooney scoring his first goal of the season at 54:24. He took a left-to-right cross from Sean Babcock and slipped the ball past Gonzaga keeper Vito Higgins from 8 yards out on the right side.
Portland held better than a 3-to-1 edge in shots 25-7. Higgins had nine saves while Fastabend had two in the Portland net. Gonzaga was outshot 4-0 in the first overtime - Portland hitting the crossbar with one shot - and the Bulldogs held a 3-2 edge in shots in the second OT.
Gonzaga will be at Loyola Marymount next Friday, then play consecutive days at the University of San Diego next Sunday and Monday, the second contest a makeup of a match that was postponed in Spokane earlier this year after heavy rains and three matches in a span of 48 hours left Martin Field unplayable.
