SPOKANE, Wash. - Gonzaga University senior goalkeeper Ashley Haugen continues to reap the rewards for her performance this past weekend in helping lead the Gonzaga women's soccer team to back-to-back shutouts as she was named to Soccer America's National Team of the Week.
Haugen, who also earned the West Coast Conference Co-Player of the Week award and was named to Top Drawer Soccer's National Team of the Week, played a key role in the Bulldogs defeating the University of San Diego, 1-0, on Friday and registering a 0-0 tie against No. 5 Santa Clara University on Sunday. Haugen recorded seven saves over the weekend, four against SCU, en route to setting a new Gonzaga single-season shutouts record of nine, breaking the record that she set in her freshman campaign of 2002. The 0-0 tie against SCU was the first time in program history that the Bulldogs have tied a top-5 team, first time GU has tied SCU and ended a 12-match win streak by the Broncos over the Bulldogs. Haugen has now posted four consecutive shutouts not allowing an opponent to score since the Oct. 9 loss to the second-ranked Pilots of the University of Portland. Haugen is bolstering a 0.37 goals-against-average in WCC play, only allowing two goals in WCC action, and has an overall GAA of 0.79.
Haugen and the 20th-ranked Bulldogs will look to extend their points lead for third place in the WCC over Saint Mary's College on Sunday with a noon match against the Gaels at Saint Mary's Stadium.
