MOSCOW, Ida. - The Gonzaga University women's basketball team ended the month of November on a sour note as the Bulldogs dropped their fourth straight game to finish the month 1-5. Gonzaga fell 69-62 to regional foe the University of Idaho at Cowan Spectrum on Wednesday night. Idaho improved to 2-2 with win.
The Bulldogs won the battle on the boards holding a 38-28 advantage but could not overcome the hot shooting of Emily Faurholt (30) and Leilani Mitchell (20) as the Vandal pair contributed for 50 of the team's 69 points. Gonzaga countered with two players in double figures also as Stephanie Hawk scored 17 to hit double digits for the eighth straight game. Anne Bailey added a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds.
Gonzaga held a seven point lead with 8:37 remaining in the first as Hawk connected for a pair of free throws. Idaho slowly chipped away at the lead with Faurholt hitting a jumper with 56 seconds left in the half to give the Vandals 33-32 halftime lead.
The two teams traded the lead seven times in the second half with Gonzaga grabbing its final lead with 5:13 remaining on a Simone Santos lay-up. The junior college transfer would finish with 8 points. Sophomore guard Dominique Harris added 9 for GU.
Idaho took advantage of several missed Bulldog free throws and two turnovers to take control during the final minutes. Karly Felton hit a lay-up with 4:48 left to tie the game for the final time while Mitchell sank a free throw with just over 3 minutes left to give UI the lead for good. Mitchell hit four-of-six free throws over the final 1:30 to seal the game for Idaho.
Gonzaga will return to action this weekend at the Nugget Classic in Reno, Nevada. The Bulldogs face Northwestern State University of Louisiana in the tournament opener on Friday night. After a championship or consolation game on Saturday, Gonzaga will bus to Sacramento State University for a Monday night game before returning to Spokane. The Bulldogs end a month long road trip on Dec. 10 at the University of Utah. The next home game for GU will be Sunday, Dec. 18 against the University of Montana.
