DENVER - The Gonzaga University women's basketball team dominated play on the glass and finished with a higher shooting percentage than their opponent, however the Bulldogs (3-9) could not overcome 25 turnovers as they dropped their fourth straight game with a 60-52 at the University of Denver (5-5).
Gonzaga held a 30-28 halftime lead over the Pioneers as both teams played back and forth during the first 35 minutes of action. Ashley Anderson converted on a lay-up with 5:30 left in the game to tie the score at 41-41. Brooke Meyer hit a free throw 15 seconds later to give Denver the lead for good.
Gonzaga turned the ball over on consecutive possessions and Venice Adams converted a lay-up with 4:49 left to put Denver up 44-41. Gonzaga would close to within one point at 51-50 with 52-seconds left as Anne Bailey hit a jumper. Tyesha Lowery would score two of her game-high 17 points on the next Pioneers possession and Gonzaga would turn the ball over on the ensuing play setting Denver up for the win.
Stephanie Hawk hit a late jumper to give her a team-high 13 points to go along with 10 rebounds. It marked the second double-double of her career. Elaina Renius also played well for the Zags with 6 points, 4 rebounds and 4 blocks.
Adams had a double-double for DU with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Gonzaga won the battle on the boards 44 to 28 over Denver and finished shooting 38 percent from the field compared to 37 percent for the Pioneers.
Gonzaga will look to end their recent slide on Friday afternoon when they host San Jose State University at the McCarthey Athletic Center at 2 p.m. Gonzaga lost the season opener to the Spartans 69-61.
