OREM, Utah - The Gonzaga University women's basketball team fell to 0-6 on the road this season as the Bulldogs dropped their final non-conference road game on Friday night at Utah Valley State College (4-8). Gonzaga held a five-point lead at the half but the Bulldogs (4-10) shot only 27 percent in the second half as they were knocked off 60-51.
Stephanie Hawk paced Gonzaga to a 30-25 halftime lead as she connected on 7-for-11 from the field for 16 points. Hawk would be shut down in the second half scoring only 3 points to lead all scorers with 19. Hawk was only 1-for-3 in the second half.
The Bulldogs pushed the halftime lead to 7 points to open the second period as Anne Bailey drained a jumper for two of her 9 points. Utah Valley State would score the next seven points to even the game at 32-32 as the two squads had 8 second half ties.
Bailey again pushed the Bulldogs into the lead with 4:56 left in the game hitting a pair of free throws to put GU up 49-48. Utah Valley State would turn to Miriam Palkki who hit a jumper 10 seconds later to give UVSC the lead for good. The Wolverines would score eight of their final 10 points on free throws as Gonzaga was forced to foul after missing several shots down the stretch.
Palkki led Utah Valley State with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Robyn Fairbanks added 12 points as UVSC hit 12-of-14 free throws in the second half while shooting 45 percent from the floor in the second half.
Gonzaga struggled for the second straight game from the charity stripe as the Bulldogs hit only 52 percent from the free throw line. Jami Bjorklund kept the Bulldogs in the game in the second half finishing with 13 points.
The Bulldogs play their final non-conference game on Monday night at the McCarthey Athletic Center when they host Portland State University. Gonzaga will also open West Coast Conference action at home next weekend when they host Santa Clara University at 8 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 6 and Saint Mary's College at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 8. The Santa Clara game will be broadcast on FSN while the SMC game is being carried on KHQ-TV.
