SPOKANE, Wash. - Gonzaga University head baseball coach Mark Machtolf announced the additions of three players to wear the Gonzaga uniform for the 2007 season. Signing National Letters of Intent are Bryan Barnes, Mark Ellis and Sebastian Herve.
Barnes joins the Bulldogs as a middle infielder from Mt. Lake Terrace High. Barnes was a first-team All-Wesco selection after hitting .485 with one triple and two home runs, earned a state of Washington 4A second-team All-State honor and was named to the Star Times first-team All-Area team as a junior.
"Brian Barnes is a left-handed hitting shortstop who we think is going to be an outstanding player for us. We think he can be an everyday shortstop for us in the future and he could possibly hit in the top of our order," said Machtolf.
Ellis comes to Gonzaga by way of Archbishop Carney Regional Secondary School in British Columbia. As a junior Ellis hit .425 and led the Premier Baseball League in RBI with 58, doubles with 21 and plate appearances with 182 and was tied for second in home runs with seven.
"Mark is a middle of the order type hitter, who we think can not only hit for average, but hit for power as well. We see him as playing either second or third for us in the future," said Machtolf.
Herve will transfer to GU from Cochise Community College in 2007. He was a second-team All-Arizona Community College Athletic Conference selection and earned a second team All-Region 1 honor in 2005. He hit .357 with 66 hits, 49 runs scored and led the conference in stolen bases with 28.
"Sebastian is a switch hitter and adds athleticism to our team and to what we are trying to do here. We see him hitting at the top of our order and I think he is a plus defender and runner."
