Zags Lose Slugfest to South Alabama

SURPRISE, Ariz. - The Gonzaga University baseball team (2-3) lost a slugfest to the University of South Alabama (1-1) in the second game of a doubleheader Saturday at the Coca-Cola Spring Training Tournament.
After the Jaguars jumped out to a two run lead, the Bulldogs bats came alive in the fourth inning as they scored seven runs on nine hits. GU scored its first four runs on consecutive RBI singles by junior center fielder Jackson Brennan, junior catcher Kiel Thibault, junior second baseman Scott Campbell and senior right fielder Jeff Culpepper. Two batters later, freshman Will Ayala rocketed a single to center field bringing across both Thibault and Culpepper. Freshman Darin Holcomb finished off the Bulldogs big inning when he plated Ayala on a RBI single to center field giving the Bulldogs a five run lead.
The five run lead disappeared quickly as the Jaguars scored six runs on six hits in the top of the fifth inning to regain the lead. USA added an insurance run in the eighth to end the scoring for the game.
Brennan was the offensive leader for the Bulldogs as he went 4-for-5 with one RBI and one run scored.
Gonzaga junior pitcher Jay Bryner (0-2) took the loss for the Bulldogs allowing eight runs, one unearned, in 4.2 innings of work. Chase Christianson (1-0) picked up the win for South Alabama allowing zero runs on three hits in five innings of work.
The Bulldogs will be back in action on Sunday as they close out play in the Coca-Cola Spring Training Tournament against host Arizona State University in a 2 p.m. game.
