TEMPE, Ariz, - Behind a strong pitching effort, the New Mexico State University Aggies handed the Gonzaga University baseball team a 5-1 loss Sunday morning at Packard Stadium in the Bob Schaefer Memorial Tournament.
With the win the Aggies improve to 1-3 overall this season while the Bulldogs fall to 1-2. This was the first meeting in baseball between NMSU and Gonzaga.
The Aggies jumped out to a quick lead as Luke Hopkins, Adam Harvey and Cole Monreal all recorded RBI singles in the first frame for NMSU to give the Aggies their first lead of the season.
The Bulldogs broke up NMSU's starting freshman pitcher Brian Sizemore's no-hitter in the sixth inning when junior center fielder Jackson Brennan doubled to left center bringing across sophomore shortstop Aaron McGuinness, who was hit by a pitch, which cut the Zags deficit to two.
The Bulldogs would come no closer to the Aggies and in the eighth inning New Mexico State put the game away as Harvey hit a home run over the center field fence driving in the final two runs of the game.
Senior right fielder Jeff Culpepper led the Bulldog offense as he went 2-for-4. Gonzaga's preseason All-American catcher Kiel Thibault didn't record a hit as he went 0-for-3 on the day.
Junior Patrick Donovan (0-1) picked up the loss for the Bulldogs as he allowed three runs on eight hits in 5.2 innings of work. Sizemore (1-0) recorded the win for the Aggies as he allowed one run on two hits in six innings of work. Brian Gausman picked up the save for NMSU as he allowed four hits in three innings of work.
