FRESNO, Calif. - The Gonzaga University baseball team saw its three game win streak come to an end with a 6-3 loss to Fresno State University Friday evening at the Pepsi/Johnny Quick Classic.
With the loss Gonzaga drops to 11-7 and Fresno State improves to 11-13.
Fresno State jumped out to an early lead as they put up two runs in the first inning. Nick Moresi hit a one run triple to left-center field for the first run and Beau Mills then grounded out to second base which platted Moresi for the second run of the inning. Fresno State would add two runs in each of the third and fourth innings to take a 6-0 lead.
GU took back two runs in the seventh inning. Senior Jeff Culpepper got things started for the Zags as he hit a solo home run over the right field fence. Three batters later, GU got another run across on freshman Shawn Wayt's RBI single to left field. The Zags would score their final run of the game in the ninth inning when Culpepper came across on an error by the Fresno State shortstop for an unearned run.
Culpepper was the offensive leader for the Zags as he went 1-for-4 with one RBI and two runs scored.
Eddie Romero (2-2) held the normally potent Gonzaga bats to no hits and no runs while striking out five in 5.1 innings of work. Junior Patrick Donovan (3-2) was saddled with the loss for GU as he allowed six runs, one unearned, on seven hits in six innings of work.
The Zags will play in the third place game of the Pepsi/Johnny Quick Classic at 4 p.m. on Saturday against Penn State University.
