SPOKANE, Wash. - The Gonzaga University baseball team was defeated by the Gaels of Saint Mary's College in a West Coast Conference game, 8-4 Saturday afternoon at Avista Stadium.
With the win the Gaels improve to 8-11 overall and 3-2 in WCC play, and the Bulldogs drop to 12-9 overall and 0-2 in WCC play.
The Gaels did most of their scoring damage in the third inning as they put up six runs on three hits. The first two runs of the inning came on RBI singles by Sam Carter and Orben Frederick. Ada Bellows then hit a grand slam home run to bring in the remainder of the Gaels runs for the inning.
The Bulldogs then started to chip away at the 7-0 lead as they scored one run in the fifth inning on right fielder Will Ayala's solo shot over the right field fence, his second home run of the season.
After the Gaels scored a run in the seventh inning, Gonzaga took back two runs in their half of the inning. Third baseman Darin Holcomb got things started for the Bulldogs with his RBI single through the left side which platted Mike Terry, who had walked. Scott Campbell then hit into a double play which brought across Ayala, who had singled, ending GU's scoring for the game.
Ayala was the offensive leader for the Bulldogs as he went 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored.
Joel Fountain (2-3) picked up the win for the Gaels allowing three earned runs on seven hits in seven innings of work. Junior left-hander Patrick Donovan (3-3) was saddled with the loss for the Bulldogs allowing seven runs on nine hits in six innings of work.
The Bulldogs will close out their three-game series with the Gaels at 1 p.m. on Sunday at Avista Stadium.
