SPOKANE, Wash. - Junior left-hander Patrick Donovan pitched his first complete game shutout of the season as he helped guide the Gonzaga University baseball team (15-9, 3-2 WCC) to a 3-0 West Coast Conference win over visiting Loyola Marymount University (9-14, 3-2 WCC) Friday afternoon at Avista Stadium. With the win the Bulldogs capture the three-game series.
Donovan (4-3) had one of his best performances of the season for the Bulldogs as he allowed no runs on four hits, while striking out seven and only allowed one runner past second base in his nine innings of work.
The Bulldogs would score the only run they would need in the fourth inning on Scott Campbell's RBI single which brought across Will Ayala, who had singled.
GU would add another run in the fifth inning on Aaron McGuinness' RBI single up the middle which brought Jeff Culpepper home from second base. The Bulldogs would cap their scoring for the day in the seventh inning on a fielding error by LMU second baseman Jason Lefkowitz to put the game at its final of 3-0.
The Bulldogs had two players tally multiple hits on the day. Campbell went 2-for-4 with one RBI and left fielder Shawn Wayt went 2-for-4 as well.
LMU's Jeff Stevens was saddled with the loss for the Lions allowing three runs, one earned, on nine hits in 6.1 innings of work.
The Bulldogs will close out the three-game series with Loyola Marymount on Saturday at Avista Stadium in a 1 p.m. game.
