LEWISTON, Idaho - The Gonzaga University baseball team suffered a 7-1 loss to Lewis-Clark State College at the Banana Belt Baseball Classic at Harris Field Friday afternoon.
With the loss Gonzaga falls to 6-5 while Lewis-Clark State improves to 8-2.
Lewis-Clark State did most of their scoring damage in the third inning. The Warriors got on the boards first with Josh Celigoy's two-run home run off Gonzaga starting pitcher Josh Monroe. LCSC followed with five RBI singles to take a six run lead into the fourth inning.
In the fifth inning GU had a good scoring opportunity as the Zags loaded the based with singles by Shawn Wayt, Jackson Brennan and Scott Campbell, but were unable to bring a run across.
The Bulldogs spoiled the shutout for the Warriors in the ninth inning as Aaron McGuinness hit an RBI single to right field bringing across freshman Will Ayala, who had doubled down the left field line.
Offensively for the Bulldogs Brennan, Kiel Thibault and Ayala all went 2-for-4, with Thibault recording one double and one triple.
Carlos Fisher (1-0) picked up the win for LCSC as he pitched seven scoreless innings striking out seven. Monroe (2-0) suffered his first loss of the season as he allowed six runs on nine hits in 2.1 innings of work for the Bulldogs.
Gonzaga will be back in action on Saturday as they close out play in the Banana Belt Baseball Classic with a doubleheader against the University of Portland at 10 a.m. and the nightcap against Utah Valley State College at 4 p.m.
