Zags Dominate Wolverines

LEWISTON, Idaho - Junior left-hander Jay Bryner pitched six scoreless innings as the Gonzaga University (8-5) baseball team defeated Utah Valley State College (5-9) 15-1 in the final game of the Banana Belt Baseball Classic at Harris Field Saturday evening.
The Bulldogs wasted no time in scoring as they put up three runs on three hits in the first inning. Sophomore first baseman Bobby Carlson hit a three-run double down the right field line bringing across Scott Campbell, Kiel Thibault and Jeff Culpepper.
After the Zags added one run in the second, Culpepper provided a lot of excitement for the crowd with his first collegiate grand slam home run in the bottom of the fourth inning to push the Bulldog lead to nine.
The Wolverines spoiled the shutout for the Bulldogs in the ninth inning as Kevin Hashimoto grounded out to second base bringing across Dan Bulow.
Offensively for the Zags Scott Campbell went 3-for-4 with two RBI, Mike Terry went 3-for-4 with four RBI and two home runs and Culpepper went 2-for-3 with four RBI and one home run. GU had three players record home runs; Terry recorded two, Aaron McGuinness and Culpepper each had one.
Bryner (2-2) picked up the win for the Bulldogs allowing no runs on three hits in six innings of work. Kam Mickolio (1-2) was saddled with the loss for the Wolverines as he allowed 10 runs on nine hits in 3.1 innings of work.
Gonzaga will be back in action on Monday as they travel to Fresno, Calif. for the opening game in the Pepsi/Johnny Quick Classic against Dallas Baptist University in a 4 p.m. game.
