Zags Roll Past Monmouth, 13-4

FRESNO, Calif. - Freshman Darin Holcomb went 3-for-5 with five RBI and one double to help the Gonzaga University baseball team (10-6) roll past Monmouth University (1-6) 13-4 in the Pepsi/Johnny Quick Classic Wednesday evening.
The Bulldogs used a six-hit, eight-run second inning to take Monmouth out of the game. Aaron McGuinness got things started for the Bulldogs with his RBI double to left-center field bringing across Jeff Culpepper, who had walked. An error by the right fielder later brought McGuinness home for the second run of the inning. Holcomb then platted two more runs for the Zags with his single to left field, Culpepper hit a double to left-center bringing in two more runs and Bobby Carlson capped the second-inning scoring for the Bulldogs with his two-run double through the left side.
Offensively for the Bulldogs Holcomb went 3-for-5 with five RBI and one double, Culpepper went 2-for-4 with two RBI and one double and McGuinness went 2-for-3 with one RBI and one double.
The Zags pounded out 13 hits against the Hawks with Cipriano Apicelli (0-1) taking the brunt of the damage. He allowed 12 runs, five earned, on nine hits over 4.1 innings of work before giving way to Matt Marc-Aureie in the fourth inning. Gonzaga's starting pitcher Alan Cannell (1-1) picked up his first win of the season allowing two runs on five hits in seven innings of work.
The Bulldogs will be back in action on Thursday against an opponent to be determined after the Fresno State University game Wednesday night. The Zags four possible opponents include, the University of San Francisco, Pennsylvania, Fresno State or Southern Utah University.
