SPOKANE, Wash. - Darin Holcomb and Kiel Thibault each recorded two hits to help lead the Gonzaga University baseball team to a 3-1 West Coast Conference rubber game win over the University of San Francisco Sunday afternoon at Avista Stadium.
With the win the Bulldogs improve to 20-12 overall and 7-4 in the WCC and the Dons drop to 23-11 overall and 8-4 in the WCC.
The Dons struck first as they scored their lone run of the game in the first inning on Stefan Gartrell's RBI single up the middle which scored Jonnie Knoble from second.
The Bulldogs then responded in the second inning as freshman left fielder Shawn Wayt hit his first collegiate home run to knot the score at one run apiece.
In the third inning the Bulldogs would take the lead as they scored one run on one hit. Scott Campbell led off with a walk and moved to second on Holcomb's single up the middle. Campbell and Holcomb would both move one base on Thibault's ground out to the first baseman and Bobby Carlson then brought in Campbell with his sacrifice fly to right field giving the Bulldogs a one-run lead.
The Zags would add an insurance run in the fifth inning when Thibault hit an RBI single to left field which brought across Campbell, who had singled.
Holcomb went 2-for-4 and Thibault went 2-for-4 with one RBI to lead the Bulldogs offense.
Bobby McEwen (1-2) picked up his first win of the season as he allowed one run on five hits in six innings of work. Scott Cousins (7-2) was saddled with the loss for the Dons allowing three runs on seven hits while striking out six.
The Bulldogs will be back in action on Tuesday as they will host Washington State University in a 3 p.m. non-conference game at Avista Stadium.
