COPPEROPOLIS, Calif. - Mary Kate Morgan shot a 79-80 for a 36-hole total of 159, but her Gonzaga teammates didn't fare so well on the opening day of the West Coast Conference Women's Golf Championship.
Morgan's 79 was just one of two Bulldog rounds under 80, Sarah Sheffield having the other with an opening-round 79. But she skied to a 91 during the afternoon round and was in 21st with a 170. Lacey Jo Manwaring recorded rounds of 81-83 for the Bulldogs and was tied for 17th at 164 over the par 72, 5,812-yard Saddle Creek Golf Course.
Gonzaga's team score of 660 placed the Bulldogs last in the five-team field, 10 strokes out of fourth behind the University of Portland. Pepperdine University shot a 583 and holds a seemingly insurmountable 33-stroke lead over the University of San Francisco at 613 heading into Tuesday's final round.
The Waves Marina Choi fired a 73-70 for a 143 and a 1-stroke lead over teammate Carolina Llano for individual honors. Pepperdine golfers hold the top three spots alone and a fourth is tied for fourth.
