The University of San Diego evened the series with a 2-1 win over the Gonzaga University baseball team Saturday afternoon at Cunningham Stadium.
With the win the Toreros improve to 19-16-1 overall and 5-6 in the West Coast Conference. With the loss GU saw its five game win streak come to and end and the Bulldogs drop to 17-10 overall and 4-3 in WCC play.
San Diego was first to score in the pitcher's dual, posting two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. The first run came when Tyler Fernandes bunted in Gavin NG. The final Torero run came on Steve Singleton's RBI double to left field which brought in Shane Buschini, who pinch ran for Fernandes.
The Bulldogs got one back in the eighth inning when freshman third baseman Darin Holcomb grounded out to the USD shortstop which brought accross Austin Highberger, who hit a ground rule double, from third giving GU its only run of the day.
Offensively for the Bulldogs Highberger led the charge going 2-for-3 with one run scored.
Josh Butler (5-4) picked up the win for San Diego allowing one run on five hits in eight innings of work. Junior left-hander Patrick Donovan was saddled with the loss for the Bulldogs allowing two runs on five hits while striking out six in a complete game effort.
The Bulldogs will be back in action on Sunday at 1 p.m. in a rubber game against USD at Cunningham Stadium.
