MALIBU, Calif. - No. 1 seed Pepperdine University swept the Gonzaga University men's tennis team, 4-0, during the first day of the West Coast Conference Championships in Malibu, Calif., on Friday morning. The Bulldogs dropped to 5-15 this season and will take on the loser of the No. 5 Loyola Marymount University and the No. 4 Santa Clara University match in a second round match on Saturday, April 23 at 9:00 a.m.
Pepperdine took the doubles point early, as Ivor Lovrak and Jonas Berg defeated Brett Womack and Cooper Fratt, 8-1, and Pedro Kevin Borzenski and Scott Johnson defeated Bryce Cooper and Marco Pineda, 8-1. According to tournament rules, Scott Doerner and Pedro Rico did not finish their match against Bulldogs Dru Ernst and Reid Arthur since the point had already been clinched.
Singles play favored the Waves as well. Doerner defeated Cooper in the No. 1 spot (6-2, 6-0), while Rico defeated senior Dru Ernst (6-2, 6-2) and Lovrak claimed victory over Arthur (6-0, 6-0) to claim the victory for Pepperdine. Womack, Fratt and Pineda did not finish their matches.
