Final Stats
SPOKANE, Wash. - The Pepperdine University baseball team used a four-run seventh inning to defeat the Gonzaga University baseball team in a West Coast Conference game Saturday afternoon at Avista Stadium.
With the win the Waves even the three-game series with the Bulldogs and improve to 26-13 overall and 12-4 in the WCC. Gonzaga drops to 24-15 overall and 11-5 in the WCC with the loss.
The Bulldogs jumped out to the early lead as they scored one run in each of the third and fourth innings. In the third inning Darin Holcomb hit a RBI single up the middle bringing across junior Will Ayala for the first run of the game. GU's second run came in the fourth inning on a Ayala sacrifice fly to left field bringing home Bobby Carlson for an unearned run.
After Pepperdine took a run back in the fifth inning the Zags responded with one run in the sixth inning on Scott Campbell's RBI single up the middle which brought Brandon Blank accross.
Pepperdine then exploded offensively in the seventh inning as they scored four runs on six hits to take the lead. Their runs came on a Chad Tracy two run single to right field, a Danny Worth RBI single to center field and a Luke Salas RBI single through the right side.
GU would add one run in each of the eighth and ninth innings but it wasn't enough as the Waves countered with one run in the eighth and ninth innings as well.
Offensively for the Bulldogs Campbell went 3-for-4 with one RBI and Matt Hibbitts went 3-for-4 with one run scored.
Left-hander Paul Coleman (6-0) picked up the win for the Waves allowing three runs, one unearned, on seven hits in six innings of work. Left-hander Patrick Donovan (5-5) was saddled with the loss for the Bulldogs allowing four runs on eight hits in 6.2 innings of work.
Gonzaga and Pepperdine will battle in a 1 p.m. rubber game on Sunday afternoon at Avista Stadium.
