SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Scott Campbell, Aaron McGuinness and Shawn Wayt all recorded three hits on the day as the Gonzaga University baseball team (18-10, 5-3 WCC) rallied for an 11 inning 7-6 win over the University of San Diego (19-17-1, 5-7 WCC) to claim the three-game West Coast Conference series.
Shawn Wayt led off the 11th inning with a single to right field and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Nick Merriman to put him in scoring position. That brought up third baseman Darin Holcomb who's single to right center allowed Wayt to score the go-ahead run from second.
For the second time this week the Bulldogs had to rally for a win. With GU trailing 6-3 heading into the top of the ninth inning, the Zags put on their rally caps and scored three runs on two hits. The Bulldogs led off with back-to-back walks by Jeff Culpepper and Bobby Carlson. Culpepper then came across on McGuinness' single up the middle. After a walk by Will Ayala, Wayt then hit a two-run single up the middle to knot the score a six runs apiece setting the stage for the 11th inning heroics.
Offensively for the Bulldogs Campbell went 3-for-5 with one double, McGuinness went 3-for-4 with one RBI, one run scored and Wayt went 3-for-6 with two RBI and one run scored.
Junior right-hander Nate Williams (2-0) picked up the win for the Bulldogs allowing one run on six hits in five innings of work. Matthew Falk (1-2) was saddled with the loss for the Toreros allowing four runs on seven hits in four innings of work.
The Bulldogs will be back in action on Tuesday at Avista Stadium as they host Washington State University in a 3 p.m. non-conference game.
