LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The Gonzaga University baseball team lost the first game of a pivotal four-game West Coast Conference series, 3-0, to Loyola Marymount University Friday afternoon at Page Stadium.
With the loss the Bulldogs drop to 28-23 overall and 15-12 in the WCC. The Zags still need to win two of the remaining three games to capture the WCC Coast Division crown over LMU. With the win the Lions improve to 27-25 overall and 15-12 in the WCC and are now in a tie with the Bulldogs for first place in the division.
The Lions got on the boards quickly as they scored two runs in the first inning. LMU scored their two runs on a Jon Oller single to right center field. LMU would add one more run in the sixth inning on Kyle Mura's double to right center field giving the Lions a three run cushion.
In the eighth inning the Bulldogs put on their rally caps in hopes of a late inning come back win. Kiel Thibault led off with a single through the right side and moved to second on Jackson Brennan's single through the left side. The Zags then loaded the bases with Bobby Carlson's single through the right side, but the Bulldogs were unable to push across a run leaving the game at its final of 3-0.
Carlson was the offensive leader for the Bulldogs as he went 2-for-3 at the plate.
Josh Monroe (9-4) was saddled with the loss for the Bulldogs as he allowed three runs on seven hits in seven innings of work. Jeff Stevens (6-7) picked up the win for the Lions allowing no runs on five hits while striking out seven in 7.1 innings of work.
The Bulldogs will return to action on Saturday in a double header with the Lions at Page Stadium with the first game scheduled for a noon start and the second game will begin 30 minutes after the conclusion of game one.
