Zags Drop One to LMU, 13-6

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The Gonzaga University baseball team dropped the first game of a double header to Loyola Marymount University, 13-6, Saturday afternoon at Page Stadium.

With the loss the Bulldogs fall to 28-24 overall and 15-13 in the WCC and are now one game behind the Lions in the Coast Division standings. The Bulldogs can still win the WCC Coast Division crown, but they must win the next two games against LMU to do so. With the win the Lions improve to 28-24 overall and 16-12 in the WCC.

The Lions got on the scoreboard first in the opening inning scoring their one run on a Evan Shahak sacrifice fly to left field. The Bulldogs then responded with their first run of the game in the top of the second. With two outs, Bobby Carlson got things started with a single through the left side and moved to second on Shawn Wayt's walk. Both of the base runners then advanced one base on a wild pitch, and Carlson came across on a throwing error by the catcher to knot the score at one run apiece.

The Lions then outscored the Bulldogs 9-1 over the next four innings putting GU in a 13-1 deficit. Gonzaga dug in and tried to put on a late rally scoring four runs in the seventh inning. Jackson Brennan got things rolling for the Zags in the seventh inning on his single through the left side. Carlson followed with a single to left field which moved Brennan to second base. Wayt then reached on a fielder's choice, with Brennan moving to third and Carlson being thrown out at second base. Aaron McGuinness then hit a sacrifice fly to right field which brought Brennan across for the first run of the inning. Scott Campbell then drove in the second run of the inning on a double to left field. Darin Holcomb brought the remaining two runs in on a single to center field. The Bulldogs were unable to push another run across, leaving the game at its final of 13-6.

Carlson led GU's offensive charge going 2-for-4 with one run scored.

Patrick Donovan (6-7) was saddled with the loss for the Zags allowing 11 runs, six earned, on 11 hits in 4.2 innings of work. Stephen Kahn (5-5) picked up the win for the Lions allowing six runs, one unearned, on eight hits in seven innings of work.
