LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The Gonzaga University baseball team ended the 2005 season with a 8-7 West Coast Conference loss to Loyola Marymount University Sunday afternoon at Page Stadium.
With the win the Lions move to 30-25 overall and 18-12 in the WCC, complete a four-game sweep over the Zags and will host Pepperdine University in the WCC Championship Series next weekend. With the loss the Bulldogs fall to 28-26 overall and 15-15 in the WCC.
After the Lions scored one run in the first inning the Bulldogs responded with four runs in their half of the inning. Aaron McGuinness got things started as he reached on an error by the shortstop and moved to second when Kiel Thibault was hit by a pitch. Bobby Carlson then hit a single and advanced to second on an error by the left fielder which allowed both Thibault and McGuinness to cross home plate for the first two Bulldog runs of the game. Will Ayala then drove in the final two runs on a single up the middle giving the Zags a three-run lead.
Gonzaga would add one more run to its lead in the third inning when Scott Campbell scored on a wild pitch pushing the lead to four.
LMU would then take the lead back from the Bulldogs in the fourth inning as they scored five runs on two hits. The Lions scored their runs on a two-run homer by Kyle Mura, and error by the Bulldogs and a two-run Matt White double.
After the Lions added two more runs in the seventh inning the Bulldogs would answer with two runs of their own in the seventh inning. Gonzaga scored their runs on an error by the LMU second baseman and on a Matt Hibbitts RBI single to right field, cutting the deficit to one. Gonzaga would come no closer leaving the game at its final of 8-7.
Hibbitts led the offensive charge for the Bulldogs going 2-for-4 with one RBI.
Kyle Huddy (3-3) picked up the win for the Lions allowing seven unearned runs on eight hits in 6.2 innings of work. Chris Albrecht (0-2) was saddled with the loss for the Bulldogs allowing six runs on three hits while striking out five in 3.2 innings of work.
