SAN BRUNO, Calif. - Six Gonzaga University baseball players earned All-West Coast Conference recognition on Wednesday morning as the league released the All-Conference team. Sophomore second baseman Scott Campbell was the Bulldogs only first team selection with three players earning second team honors and two players garnering honorable mention recognition.
Campbell, a junior college transfer from Auckland, New Zealand, led the Bulldogs in hitting with his .332 batting average, tied for the team-lead in hits with 70, had 10 doubles and 30 RBI.
Earning second team All-WCC honors were junior catcher Kiel Thibault, freshman third baseman Darin Holcomb and junior first baseman Bobby Carlson. Thibault finished the season with a batting average of .312, 68 hits, 11 doubles and 35 RBI. Holcomb, a product of Spokane's Shadle Park High, finished the season third on the team in hitting with a .313 batting average, tied for the team-lead in hits with 70, was second on the team in doubles with 15 and had 31 RBI. Carlson, a native of Woodinville, Wash., led the WCC and team with 57 RBI which placed him in a tie for seventh all-time at Gonzaga for single-season RBI. Carlson also led the team in doubles with 17 which placed him in a tie for 10th all-time at Gonzaga in single-season doubles. Carlson hit .256 with 55 hits and a team-leading eight home runs.
Junior pitchers Josh Monroe and Patrick Donovan both earned WCC honorable mention. Monroe, a right-hander from Woodinville, Wash., earned honorable mention recognition after posting a 9-4 record, a team-leading ERA of 3.03 and a team-leading 66 strikeouts. Donovan, a product of Spokane's North Central High, rounds out the Bulldogs All-WCC honorees after the left-hander posted a 6-7 record with an ERA of 3.22. Donovan ranked second on the team in strikeouts with 62.
Pepperdine University swept the WCC individual honors as Chad Tracy was tabbed the WCC Player of the Year, Paul Coleman was named the WCC Pitcher of the Year and Barry Enright was named the WCC Freshman of the Year. Nino Giarratano of the University of San Francisco was named the WCC Coach of the Year.
