SPOKANE, Wash. - Gonzaga University lost more than a soccer match in a 3-2 setback to Jacksonville University in the second match of the Gonzaga Nike Soccer Classic on Friday.
The Bulldogs lost the services of senior defender Robert Anderson who suffered a broken leg with 13:21 remaining. He was taken off the field by ambulance after a 27-minute delay as darkness crept in on the end of the match and a furious Bulldog comeback was thwarted.
the first match, Oregon State University and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee battled to a 1-1 double-overtime tie.
The Gonzaga Nike Soccer Classic continues Sunday with OSU facing Jacksonville at noon and Gonzaga battling UW-Milwaukee at 2 p.m.
Anderson suffered the career-ending injury when he took a shot in close near the right post. In the ensuring pileup a player rolled into Anderson's leg and several players from both sides reported hearing the loud pop as the leg gave way.
"It's tougher to lose players than it is to lose matches," Gonzaga head coach Einar Thorarinsson said. "I'll take the losses if I can just have my players back."
Anderson, who moved from defender to midfielder this season, is the latest in a long line of midfielders to be sidelined for all or part of the season just six matches into the campaign. John Palladino suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury in the first match in May while playing for the Colorado Bandits, the ensuring surgery sidelining him for the season. Scott Campbell suffered a medial collateral injury on Tuesday against OSU and will be re-evaluated on Tuesday. He was in street clothes and on crutches at Friday's match. John Reha is out for the season after suffering a broken foot in a non-soccer injury over the summer. Steve Owens is out for the year with a knee injury that is a carryover from a year ago.
As for the match, the Bulldogs held a 26-10 edge in shots and made things interesting down the stretch after Jacksonville had taken a 3-1 lead on Tommy Krizanovic's second goal of the day and ninth of the season at 74:10. He converted a Jonathon Jackson rebound into the goal as the ball went off Gonzaga keeper Vito Higgins and right to the waiting Krizanovic.
But the Bulldogs came back as George Josten scored his second goal of the sunny afternoon and his fifth of the season at 88:09 off an assist from Grant Lundberg.
The Bulldogs had several great chances to tie in the waning seconds. Lundberg had a shot saved by Dolphins' keeper Paul Kehoe, who had three saves in his season debut in goal. The rebound came to Luke Miller who banged a shot off the post, Lundberg had another shot blocked and Bryan Mullaney shot high over the crossbar from close range. The Bulldogs had one final try when they got a corner kick with 21 seconds remaining but could not cash in.
The Bulldogs scored first as Josten got a one-touch from 5-yards to beat Kehoe at 9:53. But the Dolphins came back with a pair of goals for a 2-1 halftime lead. Anton Axelsson shot from the left wing and beat Higgins to the near post at 23:32 and Krizanovic beat Higgins on a low shot from 5-yards at 24:24.
In the opening match, UW-Milwaukee grabbed a 1-0 lead at 24:41 as Steve Bode scored his second goal of the season. Dale Weiler had a rebound of a corner kick battled for near the left post, the ball popping out to Bode who beat OSU keeper Packy Deenihan. Zeke Dombrowski and Steve Sperl assisted.
The Beavers tied the match on a penalty kick by Daniel Leach at 68:29, a Panther defender called for a handball in the box.
In the last week OSU has tied No. 1 Indiana University 2-2 and now tied UW-Milwaukee, who received votes in this week's NSCAA poll.
