Sept. 30, 2005

Box Score

SPOKANE, Wash. - Sophomore forward's Cristin Leverson and Nanda McCormick and freshman defender Lori Conrad each tally a goal as the Gonzaga University women's soccer team cruised past the Vandals of the University of Idaho, 3-1, Friday afternoon in a non-conference match at Martin Field.

With the win Gonzaga ties a program record with its fifth consecutive win, remains undefeated on its home pitch and is now off to its best start in program history at 7-2-1. With the loss the Vandals drop its sixth consecutive match and fall to 2-8-0.

With the rain falling hard throughout the entire of the match, Gonzaga was able to dig in the soggy playing field and score two first half goals. The Zags scoring began at the 31:00 mark when sophomore Jamie Blanche skied a corner kick into a crowded Vandal goal box to the head of Conrad, who was able to redirect the ball out of the reach of UI's starting goalkeeper Lindsay Smith for her first collegiate goal.

Just six and a half minutes later the Bulldogs increased their lead when Leverson tallied her third goal of the season. At the 31:21 mark junior defender Beth Drollinger launched a cross into the Vandals goal box. Leverson rose above all the defenders and headed the ball past Smith pushing the lead to two.

Shortly into the second period of play the Zags put the game out of reach when McCormick was able to score her team-leading sixth goal of the season. Drollinger again found herself in a position to place the ball inside the Vandals goal box where McCormick headed the ball past Smith to cement the Bulldogs victory.

Idaho spoiled the shutout for the Bulldogs in the 82nd minute. Jenny Springer was able to corral a pass from Hayley Henry and hit a 30-yard shot that just scraped under the cross bar out of the reach of GU's back-up goalkeeper Laura Higby.

Gonzaga's senior goalkeeper Ashley Haugen picked up the win for the Bulldogs not allowing a goal, while her counterpart, Smith, allowed three goals and recorded seven saves in taking the loss for Idaho.

Gonzaga outshot the Vandals 13-5 and held a territorial advantage in corner kicks, 8-1.

Gonzaga will look to extend its five-match win streak and remain undefeated at home on Sunday as they host Portland State University in a 11 a.m. non-conference match at Martin Field.
