Baseball Drops Series Opener At New Mexico State

LAS CRUCES, NM - Gonzaga University picked up 11 hits on Friday afternoon but it was not enough for the No. 29 Bulldogs (6-2) to hold off host New Mexico State University (4-4). The Aggies scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth to win the series opener 5-3. The teams will resume the series on Saturday afternoon.
Gonzaga took its first lead of the game in the top of the fifth as Darin Holcomb hit a liner to right field that scored Tyson Van Winkle and Scott Campbell. That would be all the damage Aggies starter Jason Conner (1-0) would allow as he scattered 10 GU hits over seven innings.
Patrick Donovan (1-1) was also strong on the mound for the Bulldogs allowing four runs on six hits over 6.1 innings of work. Luke Hopkins had the biggest of those six New Mexico State hits as he connected on a three run homer in the bottom of the fifth to give the Aggies a 4-2 lead.
Brian Gausman closed out the game for New Mexico State with two innings to pick up his first save. Bobby Carlson homered off Gausman to open the ninth before he sat down the next three batters. Campbell, Carlson, Jackson Brennan and Zach Woodward all had two hits for GU. New Mexico State had three hitter with multiple hits including Adam Harvey who had a solo home run to lead off the 4th.
