Baseball Knocks Off Another Southland Foe

EDINBURG, Texas - Gonzaga University made it two wins in two days against Southland Conference opponents as the Bulldogs (2-1) scored five runs in the middle innings to knock off Texas State University (0-2), 8-4, in day three action of the Texas Pan American Tournament. Gonzaga edged past Lamar University on Friday afternoon for its first win of the season.
Tied 2-2 entering the top of the fourth, Gonzaga opened the inning with Shawn Wayt single. Wayt would come around to score on the first of two triples by Zach Woodward. Ryan Wiegand offered up an RBI single to drive home Woodward while Scott Campbell drove home the final GU run of the inning. Texas State starter Dan Donaldson (0-1) would finish the inning but was tagged with the loss.
Wayt drew a walk to open the top of the fifth and Woodward again sent him around the bases with an RBI triple. Aaron McGuinness drove Woodward home with an RBI double to give Gonzaga a comfortable lead.
Junior Bobby McEwen (1-0) scattered 11 Bobcat hits but was effective in seven innings of work allowing all four Texas State runs. TSU scored in the first on a wild pitch and in the third on a sacrifice fly. Heath Keel and Kyle Jones added RBI singles in the seventh for the Bobcats final runs. Keel was 3-for-5 for TSU.
Gonzaga was led by Woodward's 3-for-5 day at the plate. Senior Jackson Brennan also had two hits including a lead-off home run in the first, his second home run of the season.
The Bulldogs close out tournament action on Sunday morning with a game against the University of Northern Colorado.
