Women's Basketball Picks Up Rare Road Win

MORAGA, Calif. - Stephanie Hawk scored 21 points and led the way as the Gonzaga University Bulldogs (11-13, 6-3 WCC) picked up a rare road win with a 68-58 victory over Saint Mary's College (10-12, 5-4 WCC) on Saturday afternoon. The win ended a nine-game road losing skid this season for Gonzaga as the Bulldogs anchored their third place position in the West Coast Conference standings.

With the scored tied at 28-28 with just over two minutes remaining in the first half, Gonzaga closed out the with a 9-5 run behind baskets by Hawk, Juliann Laney and Simone Santos to hold a 37-33 advantage. Hawk had 15 of her game high 21-points in the first half hitting 5-of-10 from the field. Gonzaga shot 52 percent from the floor in the first half and 47 percent for the game.

Gonzaga continued to run away from the Gaels over the first eight minutes of the second half as Katie Prichard's bucket with 12:09 remaining lifted the Bulldogs to a 49-39 lead. The lead grew to as high as 17 points on a Laney lay-up with 1:57 left before Saint Mary's closed to within 10 as the game ended. Jontelle Smith led the Gaels with 13 points while Evynn Van Burger added 10.

Ashley Anderson contributed 15 points for the Bulldogs and Laney had a season-high 10 points, hitting 3-for-3 from the floor. Gonzaga returns to action next Saturday afternoon with a road contest at the University of Portland.
