Box Score

MILWAUKEE, Wisc. - The University of Wisconsin scored at 12:34 and it was all the 20th-ranked Badgers needed to upset 12th ranked Gonzaga University in Friday's opening match of the Panther Invitational hosted by the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

Nick Carbonna scored his first goal of the season for UW (4-1-0) off a combo in front of the net after a short corner kick by Zack Lambo.

The Bulldogs (2-2-0) held a 13-10 edge in shots and both teams had five shots on goal.

Gonzaga threatened late in the match to knot the score, John Palladino being denied by UW keeper Alex Horwath at 88:41 and Tim Muravez' header off a Ben Funkhouser corner kick at 89:02 sailing high. Six of Gonzaga's nine second-half shots came in the final 17 minutes, Horwath called on to make two of his five saves in the match during that stretch.

Gonzaga keeper Vito Higgins had three of his four saves in the second half.

The physical match saw Wisconsin called for 19 fouls to 13 for Gonzaga. The Bulldogs had two yellow cards while the Badgers were assessed three.

Gonzaga will meet the host Panthers Sunday at 12:30 p.m. Pacific time.

UW-Milwaukee remained winless in five starts Friday as senior Tenzin Rampa sent a final shot off the cross bar in the closing seconds, helping Drake University (3-2) escape with a 2-1 victory over the Panthers in the late match.

Rampa sent a 25-yard shot from the right side of the penalty area on goal with just 10 seconds remaining in the match. It made it over the head of the Drake goalkeeper, but caught just enough of the cross bar to prevent it from finding the back of the net and sending the game to overtime.

Wisconsin will face Drake in Sunday's opener.
