SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Gonzaga University women's soccer team closed out its 2008 season with a scoreless draw against Santa Clara University Saturday afternoon.
The Bulldogs finish the season with a 7-10-3 overall record and 2-4-1 in the WCC while the Broncos end their season with a 4-12-4 overall record and 1-4-2 in the WCC. Gonzaga played in its school-record fifth double-overtime match of season and also tied the school-record set by the 1996 squad for the most overtime matches played in a season with six.
Sophomore goal keeper Lauren Ames finished the season by posting her seventh shutout of the season and ninth of her career as both marks rank her third in the school record books for shutouts in a season and total career shutouts. Ames made 12 saves in the match, tying a career-high she set earlier this season against Weber State University Oct. 5.
After taking three of the matches first four shots the Bulldogs were on the defense the rest of the match as SCU finished with a 30-7 shot advantage including 12 shots that came in the first half and later produced a 9-0 shot advantage in the extra periods. Sophomore Sheridan Jones led the Zags with two shots as Jones, junior Taylor Hall and freshmen Emma Dolcetti and Courtney Peacock each recorded a shot-on-goal for GU.
The seven wins by this year's Bulldog squad is the sixth most in the school's 18-year history while playing one of the toughest schedules in the country as eight of the Bulldogs' opponents appeared in at least one national poll this season.
Jones finished the season with most points (10), most assists (4) and tied for the team-lead in goals (3) with freshmen Sarah Rhodes and Peacock. Ames will finish the season among the WCC's top three goalkeepers in shutouts and saves.
