Los Angeles, Calif. - The Gonzaga University baseball team dropped the final game of the 2008 campaign 11-1 to Loyola Marymount University Sunday in Los Angeles. Bryan Winston led the Bulldogs on the afternoon, going 2-for-4 with a run batted in. The Zags finished the 2008 season with a 30-23 overall record, while going 10-10 in West Coast Conference play.
Starter Reedy Berg (2-3) suffered the loss for GU, as the freshman allowed 10 runs on 10 hits over the opening 2.2 innings. Seniors Cory Powell and Brandon Harmon each saw time out of the pen for the Zags in the final game of their collegiate careers. Loyola Marymount (23-32 overall, 7-14 WCC) starter Nate Keadle (2-5) earned the victory, throwing a one-run complete game.
The Lions secured the victory early, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Michael Glomb opened the frame with a single to left, before scoring on a single by AJ LaMonda. Angelo Songco recorded a two-run home run to right field.
Gonzaga scored its lone run of the contest in the top of the second as Marcus McKimmy scored on a single by Winston. McKimmy had reached base on a fielders' choice before advancing to third in a single by Shawn Wayt.
LMU scored seven runs in the third inning, thanks to seven hits. The inning was highlighted by Songco's second two-run shot of the afternoon, a bases clearing three-run double by TJ Bernady and one-run hits by Jonathan Johnson and Glomb.
Loyola Marymount added one more run in the fifth on a one-run single by LaMonda, to finalized an 11-1 victory.
The 2008 season was a record breaking one for Gonzaga. The Zags posted their second consecutive 30-plus win season, a feat that had not been accomplished in 26 years. As a team, the Bulldogs also set a record for hits-per-game with 11.2.
Individually, a handful of Zags made waves in both the single season and career record books. Freshman Cody Martin posted a strong rookie campaign, finishing the season as the GU single season saves record holder with nine and ranking tied for third in single season appearances (26) and eighth in single season earned run average (2.80). Ryan Wiegand finished his junior campaign tied for eighth in the single season list for doubles with 18, while also ranking tied for seventh with 63 RBIs this season. Evan Wells finished the season tied for seventh in single season walks with 44.
In the career record books, Harmon finishes his career as the all-time appearance leader for GU with 88, while also listed eighth in innings pitched with 275. Wiegand also moved into the all-time ranks this season, where he is listed tied for seventh with 46 doubles, and tied for sixth in runs batted in with 152.
Sunday's contest was the final game for nine seniors on Gonzaga's roster - Winston, Michael Rhodes, Ben Greenslitt, Powell, Wayt, Harmon, Brandon Blank, McKimmy and Alex Parrott.
