LONG BEACH, Calif. - The Gonzaga University women's soccer team lost its 2008 season opener 4-0 at Long Beach State University Friday afternoon.
The Zags (0-1-0) were pressured by Long Beach State (1-0-0) all afternoon as the 49ers outshot the Bulldogs 22-2 and used a 10-0 corner kick advantage to pick up the victory.
Kristen Kiefer gave the 49ers a 1-0 lead at the 21:53 mark with her first of two goals, taking a header from Bo Rael and finding the back of the net. With under a minute until the half, Keifer got the rebound off a 49er missed shot and punched in her second goal to put LBSU up 2-0 at the break.
The 49er offense continued to crash the Gonzaga goal in the second half. Two LBSU corner kicks produced a pair of second-half goals as Nicole Hubbard (54:50) and Hayley Bolt (76:38) each headed in goals to make it 4-0.
Sophomore Ashley Riley and junior Christi D'Agostino each recorded a shot for the Bulldogs. Sophomore goalkeeper Lauren Ames had six saves. Breanna Truelove made one save to pick up the win for LBSU.
The Bulldogs had won their last four matches when opening the season in the road. The Zags are now 4-2 in season openers since 2003.
Gonzaga returns home to host Portland State on Sunday at 1 p.m. for the inaugural match at the new Gonzaga Soccer Field.
