Moscow, Idaho - Sophomore Ashley Riley recorded a goal and an assist to lead the Gonzaga University women's soccer team to a 3-1 road victory over the University of Idaho Friday afternoon. Three different players scored first-half goals for the Bulldogs who improve to 2-1-0 on the season.
The Bulldogs continued to attack goal, just as they had in last week's 1-0 win over Portland State University, outshooting the Vandals (0-2-0) 18-11 on the day including 8-5 in shots-on-goal.
Just 44 seconds into the match, Riley put the Zags up 1-0 with her first goal of the season. Following a quick push into the Vandal zone, freshman Sarah Rhodes fed Riley who found the right corner of the net for the score. Sophomore Sheridan Jones later gave the Zags a 2-0 lead with her first goal of the season. Jones took a pass from Riley at the 20:38 mark and beat Vandal keeper Liz Boyden to right side. The Bulldog offense was it again in the 33rd minute. A series of offensive attacks resulted in two corner kick opportunities for the Bullddogs. The second corner kick, taken by senior Kelcey Goddard, was headed in by senior Lauren Dascenzo at the 33:52 mark. Dascenzo's first goal of the season opened up a 3-0 lead for the Zags.
The three first-half goals was more than enough for the Bulldogs to pick the victory as the GU defense continued turn away any Vandal offensive threats. Ames turned in a solid performance, making four saves and allowed just the one goal that came on a Vandal shot from nearly 25 yards out and glanced high off the right post and past Ames to make it 3-1 at 54:07.
After playing two of their first three matches on the road, the Bulldogs will play their next four matches at the new Gonzaga Soccer Field beginning on Sunday at 1 p.m. against the University of Washington.
