SPOKANE, Wash. - The Gonzaga University women's soccer team picked up a 1-0 victory over the University of Montana at the Gonzaga Soccer Field Friday afternoon. Freshman Sarah Rhodes' first career netter proved to be the match-winner for the Bulldogs.
Gonzaga (4-2-0) posted its fourth win in last five matches and has won six straight matches against the Grizzlies (1-5-0).
The Bulldogs pressured early and often, outshooting the Grizzlies 6-1 in first 45 minutes but could not get one past Montana keeper Grace Harris and the half ended in a scoreless tie.
The Zags continued to operate most of the second half in Montana territory and had a couple of scoring opportunities turned away by Harris early in the period. Midway through the half, Gonzaga put together another attack after junior Christi D'Agostino gained possession of a Grizzly clearing and quickly turned the ball up field. While bringing the ball up the right sideline, D'Agostino slipped a pass to Rhodes who was crashing the net from the right corner. Rhodes dribbled the ball just to the left of the penalty shot mark and fired a shot towards the left upper "V". The shot glanced off of a diving Harris' hands and into the net at the 72:35 mark for Rhodes' first career goal. D'Agostino picked up her first assist of the season.
Sophomore keeper Lauren Ames posted her third shutout of the season and fifth of her career after making two saves. Harris made five saves for the Grizzlies in the loss. Gonzaga outshot Montana 15-3 on the day and took advantage of 12 fouls whistled against the Grizzlies.
The Zags close out their season long four-game homestand on Sunday at 1 p.m. against the University of Wyoming.
