SPOKANE, Wash. - Gonzaga University women's soccer dropped a 1-0 decision to the University of Wyoming at the Gonzaga Soccer Field Sunday afternoon.
The Bulldogs (4-3-0) saw its four game winning streak against the Cowgirls (4-4-0) come to an end. GU had won all four of the previous meetings with Wyoming.
UW held possession for most of the first half, putting together a string of offensive attacks. The Bulldogs held strong throughout the early offensive pressures by the Cowgirls but UW eventually broke through. Wyoming's Nicole Rice stopped a Gonzaga clearing attempted and quickly dribbled up the sideline and into the right corner. Rice sent a cross from just outside the keeper area to Amanda Lathrop who gained position in the middle of the Zag's defense. Lathrop then slipped a shot by a diving keeper Lauren Ames into the left side of net from 15 yards out for the lone score of match.
Gonzaga turned the tables on the Cowgirls in the second half, pressuring UW and playing most of the second period in the Wyoming zone. The Zags outshot UW 4-0 in the second half but the best scoring chances were turned away as a shot by sophomore Jessie Sorenson was blocked and two shots by Ashley Riley and Courtney Peacock both sailed high and UW held on for the win.
Jaime Scarcliff made three saves for the Cowgirls and Lauren Ames made two saves for the Bulldogs.
The Zags went 2-2 in its season-long four game home stand, posting wins over California State Bakersfield and the University of Montana. GU travels to Boulder, CO to participate in the University of Colorado Tournament next week. The Bulldogs match up with 2007 NCAA Tournament participants; Colorado on Friday and the University of Denver on Sunday.
