SEATTLE, Wash. - The Gonzaga University women's volleyball squad dropped a 3-0 decision to Portland State University in its second match of the Northwest Challenge, hosted by the University of Washington. The Bulldogs, who have lost five-straight, fell to the Vikings Friday afternoon 25-21, 25-18, 25-19.
The Zags offense rebounded from an off night, finishing their match against the Vikings with 39 kills, 19 more than the Washington match yesterday, and a .168 hitting percentage. Gonzaga, who only had three players tally kills against the Huskies, had six players finish with two or more kills in its match versus Portland State. Leading the way for the Bulldogs was junior Michelle Boevers with 11 kills, along with four digs and one solo block. Senior Elaina Renius had added 10 kills for GU; her fifth double-figure kill match of the season.
Junior Emily Johnson shattered her career-high dig record in the match, registering 18. Her previous best was 11, collected twice, once against the University of Idaho (10/3/06) and once versus North Dakota State University (8/30/08). The outside hitter also added nine kills for the Bulldogs.
Also finishing with double-figure digs was senior Paige Dillingham. The Zag libero had 12 in the setback.
Portland State was led by both Lindsey Steele and Marija Vojnovic. Steele had a match-high 16 kills along with 13 digs for the Vikings, while Vojnovic also registered a double-double of 10 kills and 11 digs.
Gonzaga will close out the Northwest Challenge at 5 p.m. today with a match against Boise State University.
