SPOKANE, Wash. - A first half goal by sophomore Sheridan Jones proved to the match-winner for Gonzaga University as the Bulldogs beat California State University Bakersfield 1-0 at the Gonzaga Soccer Field Sunday afternoon.

Gonzaga improved to 3-2-0 on the season as the Roadrunners saw their record fall to 3-3-0.

The Bulldog offense was on the attack throughout the afternoon, holding possession in the CSUB zone for most of the first half. Just past the 29th minute freshman Courtney Peacock entered the match and made an immediate impact. Peacock, making her collegiate debut, won a battle for the ball deep inside Roadrunner territory. After gaining possession in the right corner, through two defenders Peacock fed Jones the ball who then took a couple steps to her left and found the back left corner of the net from 15 yards out at the 30:17 mark. Jones' second goal of the season gave Peacock her first career assist.

Gonzaga's defense did the rest from there, holding CSUB to just five shots throughout the match including none in the first half. Cal State Bakersfield was never able to break down and a tough Bulldog defense who posted their second shutout of the season. GU went on to outshoot the Roadrunners 9-5 in the game and also finished with a 7-0 advantage in corner kicks.

Gonzaga sophomore keeper Lauren Ames made three saves to post her fourth career shutout and second of the season. Briana Estolano made two saves for the Roadrunners.

Next up for GU is a home match against the University of Montana on Friday at 3 p.m. before closing out their four-game homestand against the University of Wyoming next Sunday at 1 p.m.
