PORTLAND, Ore. - Gonzaga University suffered a tough 2-1 non-conference defeat to Portland State University Sunday afternoon. The Bulldogs (6-6-0) had Kelsey Werre record the goal as PSU (6-5-1) used two first half goals and a 18-13 shot advantage to get by the Zags.
Portland State opened the match with a couple offensive pushes eventually recording an early goal at the 16:16 mark. The Vikings leading scorer Dolly Enneking put PSU up 1-0 with her team-leading seventh goal, finding the back of the net on a header from the right side that squeaked past Gonzaga keeper Jessie Thalman.
The PSU goal woke up the Gonzaga offense as Werre's third goal of the season tied the match at 1-1 with 21:35 remaining in the half. Morgan Manchester got the play started by battling for a ball and gaining possession in PSU territory. She then delivered a nice pass up the right side and through two defenders to Werre who dribbled into the box, juked the charging PSU keeper to the left and pounded in the goal with her left foot.
Minutes later Kat Taylor had a great look turned away after she took a right cross from Emily Hutchins into the box and fired from 10 yards out but the PSU keeper Cris Lewis was able to turn the ball away at the right post to keep it at 1-1.
With under 10 minutes remaining in the half, PSU used a free kick to take a 2-1 lead. Tish Parsons took a PSU free kick from 40 yards out that landed in the box and had Kat Robertson head one over Thalman, who had come out for a punch out attempt, for the goal.
The Zags made a couple late rushes at the net but a pair of Lori Conrad headers were saved at each post by Lewis to preserve the PSU win.
Thalman made five saves for the Zags while Lewis finished with seven saves for the Vikings.
The Bulldogs will return to Portland, Ore. to open West Coast Conference play, facing No. 4 ranked and reigning WCC Champion University of Portland 7 p.m. next Saturday. .
