SPOKANE, Wash. - Gonzaga University finished off a four-game sweep of Utah Valley University (5-11) by taking both ends of a doubleheader for the second consecutive day Saturday. Gonzaga (11-5) used a solid effort on the mound from freshman starter Ryan Carpenter to take game one 4-2 and later used a 12-hit attack to win game two 9-6.

In game one, Carpenter improved his season record to 3-1 after striking out a career-high 10 batters over seven innings in his home debut. The Phoenix, Ariz. native scattered nine hits, allowed just two earned runs and was backed by a defense that turned three double plays.

On the offensive side, the Bulldogs used a second inning solo homer from junior leftfielder Mark Castellitto and RBI singles from senior second baseman Evan Wells and junior centerfielder Drew Heid in the fourth inning to complete the scoring. Castellitto's team-leading third long ball of the season gave the Zags a 1-0 lead and after Utah Valley took a 2-1 lead with two runs in third inning, the Bulldogs rallied for three runs in the fourth.

Wells finished game one with two hits, a double and a stolen base while Castellitto scored runs. Freshman Tyler Olson and junior Jacob Hiatt combined to throw the final two innings to preserve the 4-2 Gonzaga win.

In game two, the Bulldogs banged out 12 hits and used a five-run second-inning to build up a lead they would not relinquish. Gonzaga pushed one run across in the first inning on a Utah Valley error but the Wolverines came back to score two runs in their half of the second to take a 2-1 lead.

The Gonzaga bats then came alive in the bottom half of the second. Base hits by senior third baseman Jason Chatwood and Wells put runners on first and second with one out for Heid. Heid lined a shot back up the middle that hit the second base umpire in the thigh, forcing the play to be called dead. Heid was awarded a hit and the bases were now full for the middle part of the order. Junior catcher and three-hole hitter Tyson Van Winkle promptly lined two run-single to right center, scoring Chatwood and Wells. Senior first baseman Ryan Wiegand then worked a walk to load the bases one again for the Bulldogs. This time it was senior designated hitter Anthony Synegal who came up with the big hit, driving a ball deep into the right centerfield alley and clearing the bases with a three-run triple to put the Zags up 6-2.

The Bulldogs added another run in the third inning and freshman shortstop Ernesto Ortiz later added to the GU lead with his first career homer, a solo shot to left field in the fifth to make it an 8-2 ball game.

That was more than enough run support for junior starting pitcher Steven Ames (4-0) who retired eight in a row after allowing UVU's second inning runs. Ames finished with seven strikeouts and allowed three earned runs over six innings to pick up his team-leading fourth win.

After UVU put together a couple hits to score a couple runs off of the GU bullpen in the ninth, senior reliever C.J. McClure came into the game and got the final out to earn his first save of the season and preserve the 9-6 win for Gonzaga.

Wells, Heid, Wiegand and Synegal each finished game two with two hits a piece with Synegal also driving in three runs for the Zags.

Next up for the Bulldogs is a three game series against the University of Pacific beginning next Friday at 6:30 p.m. at the Patterson Baseball Complex and Washington Trust Field.
