March 28, 2009

Box Score

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - The Gonzaga University baseball team dropped an 11-4 decision to the University of San Francisco in a West Coast Conference matchup in San Francisco, Calif. Saturday. Senior designated hitter Grant Kveder led the Bulldogs (16-7, 1-1 WCC) with three hits and two runs scored.

Gonzaga looked as if they were going to pick up right where they left off Friday night, scoring three runs in the second inning of Saturday's contest after scoring six runs in the first two innings in series opener 10-2 last night. But USF (11-15, 1-1 WCC) answered back with five runs of their own in the second inning and two more in the third.

The Bulldogs had loaded the bases with one out in the second inning. Freshman shortstop Ernesto Ortiz then reached on an infield single, bringing one run home. The Zags picked up another run on the same play on a USF error and then brought home the final run of the inning on an RBI ground out from senior second baseman Evan Wells.

The Dons answered with a five-run second inning off of Gonzaga freshman starter Ryan Carpenter, using five hits and two walks to bring the runs across for a 5-3 USF lead.

USF went on to add two runs in each of third, fifth and sixth innings off of a total of three Bulldog pitchers to build up an 11-3 lead after seven complete innings.

GU added a run in the eighth inning as Kveder came home to score his second run of the day on a USF fielding error, making it 11-4.

Carpenter (3-2) took the loss after allowing seven earned runs in two-plus innings of work. He finished with three strikeouts and four walks. Doug Murray (4-0) picked up the win for the Dons after limiting the Bulldog offense to three runs on six hits and struck out five.

Gonzaga will close out its series with USF 1 p.m. Sunday.
