PALM SPRINGS, Calif. - The Gonzaga University baseball team lost a 4-0 decision to University of California - Riverside in day two of the Palm Springs Classic Friday morning.
Playing the early 10 a.m. game after having played the late game Thursday night, the Gonzaga (6-4) offense was unable to get their bats going against UCR (9-2) starter Matt Andriese. Andriese held the Zags to three hits and did not walk a batter in a complete game effort. Gonzaga sophomore starting pitcher Cody Martin also pitched well, allowing just four earned runs on six hits and struck out four in 6.1 innings.
UCR, out of the Big West Conference, scored its runs on a two-out single in the first inning and a two-run home run and solo homer in the third inning.
Junior Mark Castellitto and freshmen Royce Bolinger and Ernesto Ortiz each recorded hits for the Bulldogs.
Gonzaga continues play at the Palm Springs Classic with a Saturday matchup against Texas Tech University at 10 a.m.
